Planting a rose bush is a very important step.

Well done, it facilitates the recovery of roses, their development and flowering.

It is found either in a container, that is to say in the pot in which it underwent its last repotting, or bare root.

The roses are particularly resistant to cold (down to -25 °) but have need sun to bloom.
You will therefore choose a sunny spot rather sheltered from the wind.

When to plant a rosebush?

Ideally, the rose bushes are planted in autumn to promote rooting before recovery.

You can still plant them in spring if they are in a container or pot, watering more generously during the first months after planting.

But throughout the winter, if the weather allows it and it does not freeze, it is also possible to plant your roses.

How to plant a rose bush

Planting the rose bush is relatively simple.

The bare root roses plan imperatively in autumn, ideally in November.

Bought in jar or container, the period is less important although it is always better to plant in the fall.

  • Dig a hole about 50cm wide and 40cm deep. Hole size matters for root development
  • Put at the bottom of the hole a amendment manure and algae type.
You can also put a root stimulator. It is a product that you will find in garden centers and that facilitates the development of the roots
  • Mix then soil your garden with planting soil. You can also use a special or even universal soil
  • Scratch the roots slightly to separate them from each other.
You can separate them from each other with your fingers
  • Soak the root ball in a bucket of water to re-moisten the roots. This step promotes the recovery of roses
  • Place the root ball in the middle by spreading the roots at the bottom of the hole. This should be done with care and delicacy so as not to break the roots
  • Cover with your mixture of soil and potting soil, packing everything so that there is no air hole between the soil and the roots.

Water abundantly and compact the earth again.

Plant a bare root rose

IMPORTANT : Planting a bare root rose cannot be done outside the current period of the mid-November until the end of February, avoiding periods of frost at all costs.

Follow the same process as for a rose bush in a container, but instead of soaking the root ball in water,

  • Cut the roots in order to leave a length of approximately 20-25 cm.
  • Dip the roots in a praline in order to promote their contact with the soil once in the ground.

When planting it is important to pack well when the rose bush is in the ground so that all the roots are in contact with your mixture of garden soil and potting soil.

Exhibition to plant a rose bush

Roses need a lot of sun to flower profusely.

  • So choose a well exposed and sunny place
  • Avoid areas where the soil is heavy and wet, where water stagnates, because the roots of the rose bush do not like it and it facilitates the development of diseases
  • So prefer a rich, light and well-drained soil
